The Slab

A rarely formed trio of routes

The slab is the site of a couple of pleasant rock climbs. During the winter snow melt off the South face of Crandell causes a long low angled smear of ice to form on one of the many slabs left of the Left Gully. These routes are obvious from the road by the Warden Compound and Information Bureau. These climbs form and dissapear several times a season. If you happen to time things correclty to arrive when they are in shape, they are quite good calf burning experiences. Part of this ay be due to the excellent views down to the townsite. The routes are similar to the ice smears out on the east coast. Don't count on getting in much gear down near the bottom where the ice seems to be the thinnest. Tied off stubbies are about the only gear you will get, unless you manage to stumble upon a couple of bolts that can be found underneath. Appoach from the first swithback on Bears Hump trail. The trail goes left, you should go right, up into an open talus slope. Expect about 45min to a hour to get to the base.
