Black Holes Beyond Einstein
January 16, 2005

Interesting paper that's been making the rounds of all the science news sites. Astronomers from MIT and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have seen evidence of hot iron gas riding a ripple in spacetime around a black hole. This spacetime wave, if confirmed, would represent a new phenomenon that goes beyond Einstein's general relativity. Articles on this can be found at Physics Org among other sites. About the only problem, that I can see, is that many sites (including Physics Org) are reporting this with headlines suggesting a problem. But this appears to be a confirmation for General Relativity. (At least from what I can see) That's always a problem with science news sites - they are all too often adopting the habits of popular news sites and buying into the sensational. (New Scientist is probably the worst offender for this - although heaven knows there are plenty of examples of this problem)

I guess I'm not the only one to notice this. Over at Preposterous Universe they have a few comments on this as well.
