Where Do You Do Your Technical Reading
May 15, 2007

Where do you do your technical reading of science and philosophy?

Conner does his on the potty.

Yeah, he has a dirty face. But he's reading an article on quantum mechanics at two and a half. So you have to cut him a break. The new Doogie Howser is here.

I'm actually more impressed that you have a 2.5 year old boy potty trained than by what he is reading.

Kids usually copy their parents. So fess up, is it you or your wife who reads on the crapper?

I have to confess that I have a Heidegger book, a book on Derrida, a book on Dewey and then a few copies of New Scientist and Climbing in the bathroom. (Admittedly with kids I'm *way* too out of shape to be climbing right now - but hope springs eternal that we'll get back to a better schedule)

He's not really potty trained yet. More a work in progress. Reading helps him. He picks what to read though.

Thanks for the reading tip. We have been trying to get our second son potty trained and he is impervious to both bribes and punishments. We normally don't punish for something like potty training but we are getting desperate so I gave it a try, no luck. Maybe the reading thing will help.

Might I suggest a subscription to New Scientist for him?

What's the difference between New Scientist and Scientific American? I've subscribe to the latter in the past, but know nothing about the former.

Like I said, we are getting desperate, maybe I'll give it a try.

New Scientist is primarily bits of news stories. (You can read those recent stories at their web site) They then have 2 - 3 main stories. They are sometimes good albeit usually a bit sensationalist. Then there are some fun segments.

I don't know why, but I just can't get into Scientific American. I thought it was excellent in the 70's and early 80's. But now... I don't know.

I like the short news bit that New Scientist provides.

I should add that it seems to me that Scientific American has been aping New Scientist of late - probably because of the gains NS has made in the market.

That young man is going to be very upset when he grows up and finds out that there's a picture of him on the potty all over the internet.

LOL. It'll make up for me having to live through his terrible 2's. He's taken his clothes off twice tonight because he didn't want to go to bed. Since he's still learning to be potty trained that meant wet sheets too. So think of it as kharma in action.

And I was feeling proud that our 21 month-old knows his ABC's--guess we'll have to step it up a notch....

Actually if you have a 21 year old who knows all their ABCs that's pretty impressive. Doubly so if it is a boy rather than a girl. (Girls seem to pick up language much earlier)
